Resistance is Pointless
Some on Twitter are staying and trying to act as a “resistance” in the vain hope of changing Twitter back or hurting it. It’s based on a flawed premise. This is a message to you, the users, who are trying to fight back from Radio Free Social Media. The chair is against the wall. Jean a de longue moustache.
You are not a citizen, and Twitter is not Nazi Occupied France. There is no Allied invasion coming to force Musk and his co-owners out, and rescue you. Musk and friends are not an occupation force. They are the owners. They purchased it from the previous owners who exchanged their shares for cash. If you want to be a “citizen”, then spin up your own Mastodon instance and run your own social media platform.
You are a tenant. The “rent” is paid by logging in, posting tweets, and seeing or clicking on ads. You are, to Twitter, an mDAU, a Monetizable Daily Active User. Just logging in and looking at tweets generates revenue and helps Twitter’s owners. The longer you are active on Twitter in a day, and the more you scroll, the more money Twitter makes. When you tweet something, you help Twitter’s current owners, you don’t hurt them.
If you want to hurt Twitter, to help make it untenable as a business, you need to lock down your account, delete your tweets and DMs, and then log out. At most have one last tweet letting your followers know you are gone. Having millions of idle accounts tells a story to advertisers, and it isn’t a good one. Idle accounts and decreasing mDAUs reduces ad revenue, which is most of Twitter’s income.
Voting in Elon’s polls won’t change the outcome. You all voted for him to step down as CEO. He hasn’t. There’s no indication he will. And it’s just a title. He will still set policy and make most of the decisions. The poll changed nothing that mattered.
Continuing to use Twitter helps them, it doesn’t hurt them. Absence hurts Twitter, not presence. Resistance is pointless. Prepare to be evicted. Elvis should leave the building.
